Is What I'm Hearing the Lord's Voice-- or Just My Own?

Is What I'm Hearing the Lord's Voice-- or Just My Own?

I love this question!

This is one of the most common hindrances I see surface when I walk people through discovering and discerning the voice of the Lord. Honestly, it’s a wonderful question because it shows me that you truly desire to live from the life of the Spirit rather than the life of the flesh. I can reassure you that you are already on the right track simply by becoming aware that there are multiple voices at play.

To find, discern, and know the voice of the Lord requires slow, thoughtful, and intentional work. His voice will not shout at you, and it will not manipulate you. Instead, it moves like a slow and steady current of love—something you can learn to flow in consistently. It is also a covering of protection that keeps you from falling into evil and shields you from the fiery arrows of the enemy.

First, I want to remind you that communion is the goal when it comes to discerning God’s voice from your own. As we grow and mature in Love, the gap between your voice and the Lord’s becomes smaller and smaller. Almost like this “>”. You are at the bottom, and the Lord is at the top. You are on the journey of becoming one with Him.

As you learn His voice, become it, and walk in obedience to it (learn more about that here), you will begin to find that your voice and His intertwine in a beautiful way—much like when Adam walked with God. This is the place we are returning to. You will get to the point where you have walked with Him for so long that you know Him very well, and any other voice feels icky and foreign.

But for now, it’s important to remember that this is a maturing process. As you begin learning to recognize His voice, there will be moments when you are discerning from human wisdom rather than from the Wisdom of God. And that’s okay. We are learning. God is kind in His discipline and patient in His teaching, and you will get there if you refuse to give up—I promise. Continue to repent from human wisdom and continue to ask what the Spirit of Wisdom would say.  Because you are listening from a place of communion, you are already the beloved.

One of the most encouraging love notes the Lord gave me while I was wrestling through a prophetic word was this: I’m working before you, behind you, and after you so that you will not be made a liar.

When you wait for the Lord’s voice in directional situations, He loves to prove Himself true to you. If you step out on a limb to obey Him based on a word He gave you, He will come through for you—because He loves risk-takers. He will never put the godly to shame (Romans 10:11).

When you practice hearing the Lord’s voice, I believe He carries a nature of coming through for you. So it becomes less about hitting a perfect target of right or wrong and more about faithfully following through on what you hear and doing that. I want to meet you at the place of the sideways triangle where the disparity is largest. This is the point in your journey where you have been awakened to this idea that yes, the Lord really does speak to you and you are deciding to grow in how you understand and approach Him and allow Him to approach you.

With that encouragement, here are some basic key ways to understand and discern whether what you are hearing is your own voice or the Lord’s.

1.) The Words or Visions Seem Outside of You (Or Come from Seemingly Nowhere)

Often the voice of the Lord will come to you as words that feel slightly outside of your own internal dialogue. It may still pass through your thoughts, but it carries a tone that feels different from the way you normally reason with yourself. Instead of sounding like your mind working something out, it feels more like something being gently offered to you. Almost like a sentence dropped into the quiet of your spirit. It does not push or demand your attention, but when you notice it, you sense that it came from somewhere deeper than your own thinking.

2.) It contains ideas and things you wouldn’t be able to figure out on your own

Another key marker is when the thought carries wisdom that you would not normally arrive at by your own reasoning. Sometimes the Lord will speak something simple but profoundly clear—something that cuts through confusion in a way your mind could not have arranged on its own. It may bring understanding about a situation, insight into someone’s heart, or a next step that was not obvious before. When His voice comes like this, it often feels like light quietly turning on in a room you didn’t know how to illuminate.

3.) If you have to ask, “What does that mean?” you’re probably on the right track

Interestingly, the voice of the Lord will often lead you into curiosity rather than instant certainty. When you find yourself asking, “What does that mean?” or “Lord, can you show me more?” you may actually be closer to hearing Him than you realize. God loves to invite us into discovery. Instead of giving you every answer all at once, He often speaks in ways that draw you into conversation with Him. The question becomes an invitation to linger with Him a little longer, to search His heart, and to let understanding unfold as you walk with Him.

4.) It carries the essence and fruit of Jesus (Galatians 5:22)

Above all, the voice of the Lord carries the essence of Jesus Himself. It will bear the fruit of His nature. The voice of the Lord rarely sounds like bigger, faster, stronger, more powerful. More often, it looks like the Lamb. It sounds like humility, surrender, gentleness, rest, and quiet obedience. It may call you to lay something down rather than pick something up. It may lead you toward forgiveness instead of vindication, toward patience instead of urgency, toward trust instead of control. His voice does not strive for dominance; it moves with the quiet authority of love.

And strangely enough, this is where the power actually lives. The voice of the Lord often sounds small compared to the loud voices of the world, but it carries the weight of heaven inside of it. It will lead you into places that look like surrender on the outside but are actually the deepest form of strength.

5.) The voice of the Lord brings clarity, not chaos

The voice of the Lord may stretch you, but it will not produce the kind of confusion that leaves you spinning in circles. Even when what He says is challenging, there is usually a quiet clarity attached to it. It may not answer every question immediately, but it settles something in your spirit. The voice of the enemy tends to rush, accuse, and overwhelm. The voice of your own reasoning can spiral into endless analysis. But the voice of the Lord has a steadying quality to it. It brings light to the next step and invites you to walk in peace rather than panic.

6.) The voice of the Lord often leads you into obedience that requires trust

Many times when the Lord speaks, what He says will require you to trust Him more than it requires you to understand everything. His voice often leads you into simple obedience—small steps that seem almost too ordinary to carry spiritual significance. Forgive that person. Send the message. Wait a little longer. Speak encouragement. Lay something down. These invitations may not look dramatic on the outside, but they shape the inner life of a person who walks with God. Over time, you begin to recognize that His voice consistently leads you into humility, faithfulness, and love.

7.) The voice of the Lord draws you toward Him, not toward self-reliance

Perhaps one of the clearest markers of the Lord’s voice is that it always pulls you back into a relationship with Him. It does not simply give you instructions and send you off to perform. Instead, it draws you closer. He loves to invite. It causes you to pause, to listen again, to ask questions, and to lean into communion. The more you practice listening, the more you realize that hearing His voice is not about mastering a spiritual skill—it is about walking with a Person. The goal is not perfect discernment but deeper friendship.

And as that friendship grows, something beautiful begins to happen. The voice that once felt unfamiliar slowly becomes the most recognizable voice in your life.

As you begin practicing these keys, remember that discerning the voice of the Lord is not about becoming perfectly accurate overnight. It is about learning the heart and nature of the One who is speaking. Over time, as you walk with Him, something beautiful begins to happen. What once felt uncertain becomes familiar. What once required careful discernment begins to feel more natural. His tone, His kindness, His wisdom, and His way of leading you into love become recognizable. And slowly, the more time you spend with Him, the more your own voice begins to reflect His. This is the journey of communion—where listening turns into knowing, and knowing turns into walking with Him in quiet, steady friendship.

xoxo. love you, julie.
